Reaction Papers Rubric

Making an Argument (50%)

  • 50 –(A) The paper addresses the general theme of the assignment, makes an well-reasoned argument, is well organized and clearly stated. It uses examples for clarification and shows an advanced understanding of the topic in question. It takes a stand.  It is between 500 and 1,000 words, not counting citations.
  • 45 — (B) The paper addresses the general theme of the assignment, and makes an good argument, is well organized and clearly stated. It uses examples for clarification and shows a good understanding of the topic in question. It is between 500 and 1,000 words, not counting citations.
  • 40 — (C) The paper addresses the general theme of the assignment, but does not make a clear argument, is confused in its points or refuses to take a stand.  It shows a limited understanding of the topic in question.  It is between 500 and 1,000 words, not counting citations.
  • 35 — (D) The paper does not closely addresses the general theme of the assignment, it makes a poor or confused argument, and is poorly organized. It uses few or badly-chosen examples  shows a flawed understanding of the topic in question.  It is between 500 and 1,000 words, not counting citations.
  • 30 — (F) The paper does not show evidence that the writer did the readings or understood the question. It does not meet the minimum of 500 words.

Using Sources (25%)

 

  • 25 — (A) Reads, uses, and cites all source required in the assignment. Provides excellent analysis of each, including how it fits into the argument in the paper.
  • 23 — (B) Reads, uses, and cites all source required in the assignment. Provides excellent analysis of each, including how it fits into the argument in the paper.
  • 20 — (C) Reads, uses, and cites some of the source required in the assignment. Provides analysis of only some and does not always fit them into the argument in the paper.
  • 18 — (D) Reads, uses, and cites only one of the sources required in the assignment. Provides poor analysis and does not demonstrate and understanding of how it fits into the argument in the paper.
  • 15 — (F) Does not provide citations to sources, or adequate analysis.

 

Writing Style (25%)

  • 25 — (A)  Paper is well-written in an engaging style. It is free from errors in grammar, mechanics, usage, and sentence structure.
  • 23 — (B) Paper is well written. It may have a few errors in grammar, mechanics, usage and sentence structure.
  • 20 — (C) Paper is written in an adequate style. It may have some errors, but generally demonstrates control of grammar, mechanics, usage and sentence structure.
  • 18 — (D) Paper is sloppy, marred by an accumulation of errors in grammar, mechanics, usage and sentence structure.
  • 15 — (F)  Paper is poorly written and has serious and persistent errors in word choice, grammar, mechanics, usage and sentence structure.

You may rewrite your reaction paper for a new grade. It must be handed in by May 10.
